Melbourne Theosophical Society | Manchester House Fitout

Project type

Institutional Interior

Location

234 Flinders Ln Melbourne CBD

A Sanctuary of Heritage and Wisdom in the Heart of the CBD
Located on the first floor of the historic Manchester House, this 600sqm fitout for the Melbourne Theosophical Society (MTS) balances modern functionality with a deep respect for Edwardian Neo-Baroque architecture. Originally designed by Bates, Peebles & Smart, the space has been stripped back to celebrate its 1912 origins, revealing the building's raw character through its original high ceilings, rounded concrete columns, and expansive steel-framed windows.

The project involved the strategic relocation of the iconic MTS Bookshop and the creation of a new, world-class library designed to house one of the most rare and eclectic book collections globally. The floor plate was transformed into a multi-functional hub featuring:
Spirituality & Wellness: Dedicated yoga and multi-activity rooms designed for tranquility.
Community & Operations: A welcoming reception, communal kitchen, modern administrative offices, and upgraded amenities.
Infrastructure: A complete overhaul of all core services, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and fire systems, ensuring the heritage shell meets contemporary standards.

With a focus on longevity and environmental responsibility, the material palette features high-performance, sustainable products:
Flooring: A tactile mix of Mohawk carbon-neutral carpet tiles and Godfrey Hirst vinyl planks.
Acoustics: Atkar acoustic ceiling systems to manage sound within the open, industrial volume.
Furnishings: Curated pieces from K-Five, blending ergonomic design with the Society’s timeless aesthetic.

The result is a light-filled, meditative environment that honors the architectural legacy of Melbourne while providing a future-proof home for the Society’s teachings and community.
